At around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, officers were called to the 14700 block of Anderson Street in Woodbridge to investigate a reported person in crisis.
Upon arrival to the area, officers found 26-year-old Javier Meija-Cardenas in his Woodbridge home brandishing a knife, raising alarm bells for first responders.
According to police, officers attempted to detain Meija-Cardenas as he exited the home, but he proceeded to flee on foot, prompting a brief foot pursuit that was swiftly ended when they caught up to him and tried to take him into custody.
However, Meija-Cardenas wasn't going to go down without a fight.
Police say that Meija-Cardenas actively resisted and took out a kitchen-style knife that he had hidden on him, leading to a struggle over the weapon that led to an officer being cut.
Following a brief brawl, other officers were able to get Meija-Cardenas into custody and the officer was treated at the scene for undisclosed injuries to his hands.
Meija-Cardenas was arrested and charged with:
- Malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer;
- Obstruction of justice;
- Carrying a concealed weapon.
He's being held without bond pending his next court appearance.
